Supreme Court To Hear Over 200 Petition Over CAA Today...

On 19 March Tuesday, Supreme Court the petitions will be filed seeking a stay on the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 as well as, the court will hear a batch more over 200 petitions to the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 CAA by the Centre. 

The petitions stay on the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, Citizenship Amendment Rule 2024, the petitions will be heard by the bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

 

Other petitoners include Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, AIMM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia, TMC leader Mahua Moitra, as well as NGOs Rihai Manch and Citizens Against Hate, along with some law students and the Assam Adovactes Associations.

This petitioners challenging the law have submitted that the CAA discriminates against Muslims on the basis of the religions. 


It also filed another case in the Supreme Court challenging CAA rules.


CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a fast-track to Indian citizenship  for migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who belong to Jain, Parsi, Sikh, Hindu , Buddist, and Christian communities who entered India on before December 31, 2014 due to facing religious persecutions in their home countries.
