Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma took to Twitter to say, "The name of a city, town or village should be reflected in the civilization, culture, tradition of that place. So you can advise the state government through this portal to change the name of your place as per its culture.

We shall launch a portal to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilisation, culture & derogatory to any caste or community.
Meanwhile the chief minister's tweet has now started with a special buzz. Shares on social media are a variety of memes. The opposition has also strongly criticised the government's announcement. The opposition says changing the name of villages and cities will not fill the stomachs of the people. '
