526-Crore Boost for Assam Inland Waterways with New Terminals and Port Corridor

Inland water transport in Assam is set to receive a major infrastructure boost with projects worth ₹526 crore aimed at strengthening river connectivity, tourism, and logistics along the Brahmaputra.
The initiatives were launched by Narendra Modi as part of efforts to modernise inland waterways and improve port connectivity in the Northeast. A key highlight of the package is the inauguration of an elevated road corridor linking Pandu Port with National Highway 27, which is expected to ease cargo movement and reduce traffic congestion in the area.
The project package also includes the development of modern cruise terminals at Biswanath Ghat and Neamati Ghat to promote river tourism on the Brahmaputra River. These facilities are expected to enhance passenger services and attract domestic and international cruise operators.
In addition, a Regional Centre of Excellence for inland waterways will be set up near Bogibeel Bridge to support training, research, and skill development in waterway operations.
Officials said the projects will strengthen Assam’s position along National Waterway 2 and help transform the Brahmaputra into a major corridor for cargo movement, tourism, and regional trade. The initiatives are also expected to generate employment and improve economic opportunities for communities living along the river.
