Assam has inaugurated its first full-fledged science city near Guwahati, a major science education and tourism facility that is reportedly larger than the well-known Science City Kolkata. The new complex, called Guwahati Science City, has been developed at Tepesia in Sonapur in Kamrup (Metro) district.
The project was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the centre aims to promote scientific learning and inspire curiosity among young students across the Northeast.
Spread across about 250 bighas of land and built at an estimated cost of around ₹288 crore, the science city has been developed by the Government of Assam in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museums under the Union Ministry of Culture.
The complex houses several interactive attractions designed to make science learning engaging for visitors. Key highlights include the Eureka Gallery, which demonstrates basic scientific principles through hands-on exhibits, and the Space Odyssey Gallery, which offers immersive displays related to space exploration. A digital planetarium and multiple interactive science exhibits have also been installed.
Officials said the facility will use modern technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to help visitors experience complex scientific concepts in an interactive manner.
The state government believes the science city will emerge as an important hub for science education as well as a major tourist attraction in the region. Authorities also said that district science centres are being developed in different parts of Assam to expand access to science education.
