Bollywood actor Janhvi Kapoor faced intense trolling on social media after she shared a post reacting to reports of the killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, an incident that has drawn widespread attention and political reactions in India.
The controversy escalated after YouTuber and political commentator Dhruv Rathee criticised Kapoor’s post, questioning the selective focus of celebrities on certain incidents of violence and urging a more consistent approach to human rights issues. Following his remarks, the actor became the target of online abuse, with several social media users posting derogatory comments and personal attacks.
While many users criticised Kapoor, a significant number also came out in her support, condemning the trolling and calling it an attempt to silence voices speaking on violence against minorities. Supporters argued that expressing concern over a specific incident should not invite harassment or intimidation.
The episode has once again highlighted the sharply polarised nature of social media discourse in India, particularly on issues related to religion, violence and cross-border developments. It also renewed concerns over the safety of public figures—especially women—who speak out on sensitive socio-political matters.
As of now, Janhvi Kapoor has not issued any further statement addressing the trolling or Rathee’s criticism. Dhruv Rathee, too, has not responded to the backlash surrounding his comments.
Meanwhile, the killing in Bangladesh has sparked protests and reactions in several parts of India, with various organisations demanding greater international attention to the safety and rights of religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
