Ahead of New Year celebrations, Delhi Police carried out a large-scale security operation across the national capital, leading to the arrest of more than 200 people and the seizure of illegal weapons, drugs, illicit liquor and stolen property, officials said on Saturday.
The operation, conducted as part of heightened year-end vigilance, involved coordinated raids, vehicle checks and surprise inspections across several districts to prevent crime and ensure public safety during the festive period. Police teams targeted known crime hotspots and individuals with prior criminal records.
According to officials, those arrested were booked under various provisions of the Arms Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Excise Act and Gambling Act. Several suspects were also detained as a preventive measure to avert any law-and-order situation during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
During the crackdown, police recovered country-made pistols, live cartridges and knives, along with quantities of narcotic substances, including ganja. A large consignment of illicit liquor was also seized. In addition, police recovered stolen mobile phones, two-wheelers and other vehicles, while cash was confiscated in connection with gambling cases.
Senior police officials said the operation was aimed at curbing organised crime, drug peddling and illegal arms circulation, which tend to increase during festive periods. “The objective is to ensure that people can celebrate the New Year in a safe and secure environment. Strict vigilance will continue over the coming days,” a senior officer said.
Delhi Police have indicated that similar intensive checks and patrols will remain in place through the New Year weekend, with additional deployment of personnel at public places, marketplaces and entertainment hubs across the city.
