Dense fog continued to blanket the national capital on Monday, disrupting air and rail traffic for the seventh consecutive day, while weather officials warned that hazy conditions are likely to persist for at least two more days.
Poor visibility during the early morning hours led to widespread delays at Indira Gandhi International Airport, with several flights delayed and some cancelled as runways operated under low-visibility procedures. Airlines advised passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport, as fog conditions fluctuated through the morning.
Rail services were also affected, with dozens of long-distance trains arriving late in Delhi due to reduced visibility across northern India. Commuters faced slower road traffic as fog and haze lowered visibility on major arterial roads, prompting traffic police to urge motorists to drive cautiously and use fog lights.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said dense to very dense fog is likely to continue during night and early morning hours over parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). According to the IMD, calm winds and high moisture levels have contributed to the persistence of fog and haze, conditions that are expected to gradually improve only after the next two days.
In addition to fog, air quality in the capital remained a concern. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stayed in the very poor category in several areas, as pollutants remained trapped close to the surface due to low wind speeds. The combination of pollution and weather conditions has resulted in thick haze across the city.
Health experts have advised residents, particularly children, the elderly and those with respiratory ailments, to limit outdoor exposure during peak fog and haze hours. Authorities have also urged people to stay updated on weather advisories and travel information.
With winter conditions intensifying across north India, officials said close monitoring will continue, and further advisories will be issued if visibility drops sharply or air quality worsens in the coming days.
