Tripura Police have arrested three persons from Assam in connection with the suicide of a delivery boy in North Tripura district, while two other accused remain absconding, officials said on Wednesday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sushmita Bhattacharjee, Sangita Bhattacharjee and Sourav Bhattacharjee, all residents of Sribhumi district in Assam. They were apprehended with the assistance of Assam Police and are being brought to Tripura for further legal proceedings. The police have launched a manhunt to trace the remaining two accused.
The case relates to the death of Prasenjit Sarkar (23), a delivery boy from Dharmanagar in North Tripura. According to police and family members, Sarkar was allegedly publicly assaulted and humiliated by a group of people following a dispute over the delivery of a parcel. A video of the incident, which later surfaced on social media, reportedly caused severe mental distress to the victim.
Hours after the incident, Sarkar allegedly died by suicide, prompting widespread public outrage across the state. His family lodged a complaint accusing the group of assault, intimidation and abetment, following which a case was registered and a special investigation team was formed.
Police officials said the accused face charges related to assault, criminal intimidation and abetment to suicide, among others. “The investigation is progressing, and all those involved will be brought to justice,” a senior police officer said.
The incident triggered protests in Dharmanagar and other parts of Tripura, with residents, civil society groups and political parties demanding swift and strict action against the accused. Many have also raised concerns about the safety and dignity of gig and delivery workers.
Chief Minister Manik Saha has assured that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness and that no one involved will be spared. The police have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to cooperate with the investigation.
