The Sansad Kriya Mahotsav, a multi-day sports and fitness festival, will kick off in Jorhat on December 21, Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita announced on Saturday. The event will be held across several districts of Upper Assam, including Majuli, Sivasagar and Charaideo, and will continue till December 24.
Addressing a press conference in Jorhat, Margherita said the initiative aims to promote sports, fitness and community participation at the grassroots level. Organised as part of a nationwide programme, the Mahotsav is intended to encourage people, especially youth, to take up physical activities and traditional games.
The festival will open with a half marathon in Majuli on December 21. Besides the half marathon, the event will feature 10-km and 5-km runs, along with various indoor and outdoor sports competitions. Traditional games and local sporting events will also be organised in different venues to ensure wider participation.
Margherita said athletes from Assam as well as participants from other states are expected to take part in the Mahotsav. Winners in various categories will be awarded cash prizes, trophies and certificates. Registration for the events will be conducted both online and offline, he added.
Highlighting the broader objective of the programme, the Minister said the Sansad Kriya Mahotsav is designed to strengthen sporting culture in rural and semi-urban areas while fostering unity and healthy competition among communities.
Preparations for the event are underway, with local administrations and sports bodies coordinating to ensure smooth conduct of the programme.
