AIUDF to Support Anti-BJP Government in Assam, Says MLA Rafiqul Islam

Ahead of the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, Rafiqul Islam, a legislator of the All India United Democratic Front, has said that his party will support the formation of an anti-BJP government in the state.
Speaking to the media, Islam asserted that the AIUDF’s primary objective is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party and back a coalition of like-minded “secular” parties. He indicated that the party is open to extending post-poll support to any alliance capable of forming a non-BJP government in Assam.
The AIUDF leader further stated that if his party becomes part of such a government, it would prioritise key public issues, including irrigation, education, healthcare, and road infrastructure. He also raised concerns over persisting problems such as land erosion and challenges faced by farmers, alleging that these issues have remained inadequately addressed by successive governments.
Reiterating the party’s political stance, Islam made it clear that the AIUDF would not support the BJP under any circumstances and is committed to ensuring its defeat in the state.
The remarks come at a time when political parties in Assam are fine-tuning their electoral strategies. While the AIUDF is expected to contest a select number of seats independently, it has signalled openness to post-election cooperation with other opposition parties to consolidate anti-BJP votes.
The upcoming Assembly elections in Assam are expected to witness a keen contest, with the BJP aiming to retain power and opposition parties exploring avenues for unity to challenge the ruling party.
