The Indian National Congress has stepped up its preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections by releasing multiple lists of candidates, naming several senior leaders and new faces across constituencies.
The party has so far announced 65 candidates in two phases, with the first list comprising 42 names followed by a second list of 23 candidates. Party leaders indicated that a few seats have been kept aside for alliance partners as part of a broader electoral strategy.
Among the prominent names, Gaurav Gogoi will contest from Jorhat, while senior leader Debabrata Saikia has been fielded from Nazira. Former state Congress chief Ripun Bora will contest from Barchalla. The party has also nominated Mira Borthakur Goswami from Dispur and Indraneel Pegu from Majuli.
In addition to these key candidates, the Congress lists include several representatives from minority and tribal communities, reflecting an attempt to maintain regional and social balance. Candidates such as Kartik Chandra Ray (Golakganj), Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar (Gauripur), Wazed Ali Choudhury (Birsing Jarua), and Mohibur Rohman (Mankachar) are among those named in the extended lists.
Party sources said the selection process focused on winnability, grassroots connect, and representation across Upper Assam, Lower Assam, and Barak Valley. The Congress is also working on seat-sharing arrangements with like-minded parties, leaving around a dozen constituencies open for allies.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness a keen contest, with the Congress aiming to challenge the ruling BJP-led alliance. With the announcement of candidates, the party is likely to intensify its campaign in the coming days, focusing on key issues such as unemployment, price rise, and governance.
Further lists are expected to be released as the election schedule progresses.
