Work begins on ‘Zubeen Kshetra’ as fans mark six months since Zubeen Garg’s passing

Work on the proposed memorial site of Assam’s iconic singer Zubeen Garg, to be named “Zubeen Kshetra,” has officially begun at Hatimura in Sonapur, coinciding with the observance of six months since his passing.
Officials said the initial phase of the project has commenced with the construction of a boundary wall, being undertaken by the Public Works Department. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has allocated around 10 bighas of land for the memorial, which has already received necessary approvals from the state government.
Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Pal stated that further phases of development will be implemented in consultation with an overseeing committee. A review meeting to chart out the roadmap for the project was held earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the memorial site witnessed an outpouring of emotion as hundreds of fans gathered to pay tribute to the late artiste. Visitors from different parts of Assam arrived from early morning, offering prayers, lighting lamps, and placing flowers at the site.
Several cultural groups, including those from Majuli, brought traditional artefacts as a mark of respect, highlighting the far-reaching cultural influence of the singer across the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Garima Saikia Garg, wife of the late artiste, said the overwhelming response from admirers reflects his enduring connection with the people. She added that the proposed “Zubeen Kshetra” will include a museum to preserve his personal belongings and memorabilia, a library, and an open-air stage to promote cultural activities and nurture young talent.
Personal items associated with the singer, including his vehicle and other significant artefacts, are expected to be displayed at the museum to offer visitors a glimpse into his life and legacy.
Zubeen Garg, who passed away in September 2025, remains one of Assam’s most influential cultural figures, with a prolific career spanning decades.
Once completed, the memorial is expected to emerge as a major cultural landmark, celebrating his contribution while serving as a hub for artistic expression in the state.
