The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday announced its first list of 14 candidates for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, marking the party’s initial step toward contesting the polls in the northeastern state.
The list was released by the party leadership as political activities gather momentum ahead of the elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. Party leaders said the candidates were selected after internal consultations and assessment of grassroots support in their respective constituencies.
AAP has been trying to expand its organisational base in Assam in recent years and has indicated that it plans to contest a large number of seats in the upcoming election. The party hopes to position itself as an alternative political force in the state’s electoral landscape.
The announcement comes amid heightened political activity in the state, with major parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress also releasing candidate lists and intensifying campaign efforts ahead of the polls.
AAP leaders said additional candidate lists for the remaining constituencies will be announced in the coming days as the party finalises its strategy for the elections. The Assam Assembly election is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest involving several national and regional parties.
The party has also stepped up outreach programmes and organisational meetings across different districts to strengthen its presence before the election campaign gathers full momentum.
