The Indian National Congress on Saturday released its second list of 23 candidates for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, taking the total number of candidates announced by the party to 65 so far.
The new list follows the party’s first list of 42 candidates and reflects its ongoing preparations for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly elections expected later this year. The party has also kept several constituencies aside for its alliance partners as part of a broader opposition strategy against the ruling coalition.
Among the prominent names in the second list are Abdul Khaleque from Mandia, Rakibuddin Ahmed from Chamaria, Wazed Ali Choudhury from Birsing Jarua, Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam from Goalpara East, and Aminur Rashid Choudhury from Karimganj South. The party has also fielded Bipul Gogoi from Tingkhong, Devid Phukan from Tinsukia, Kartik Chandra Kurmi from Rangapara, and Sagorika Bora from Dergaon.
According to party sources, around 15 seats have been left for alliance partners, indicating that discussions on seat-sharing are still underway with other opposition parties.
The announcement comes amid intensifying political activity in Assam, with major parties accelerating campaign strategies ahead of the polls. The Congress aims to strengthen its position in the state by consolidating opposition votes and presenting a unified challenge to the ruling alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Further candidate lists are expected to be released in the coming days as the party finalises its electoral strategy across the state.
