Assam Man Arrested for Duping Arunachal Woman in Online Fraud

Police in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested a man from Assam for allegedly cheating a woman through an online fraud scheme by posing as a seller offering construction materials at unusually low prices.
The accused, identified as Soribuddin Ahmed, a resident of Bihpuria in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, was arrested from Kutubpur area on Thursday by a team from Arunachal Pradesh Police.
According to police officials, the accused had allegedly advertised iron rods for sale at a heavily discounted rate on an online platform. Lured by the attractive offer, a woman from the Itanagar Capital Region contacted the accused and agreed to purchase the materials.
Police said the victim transferred an advance payment to the accused’s bank account. However, after receiving the money, the accused allegedly failed to deliver the goods and stopped responding to the woman’s calls and messages.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Papu Hills Police Station. During the investigation, the police tracked the accused’s location to Bihpuria in Assam.
A police team subsequently travelled to the district and apprehended the accused from Kutubpur. He was later brought to Arunachal Pradesh for further legal proceedings.
Police officials said the incident highlights the increasing number of online marketplace frauds, where scammers lure victims by offering goods at unusually low prices and then collect advance payments without delivering the promised items.
Authorities have urged people to remain cautious while making online purchases and advised buyers to verify sellers before transferring money online. Victims of cyber fraud have also been encouraged to report such incidents immediately through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or the cybercrime reporting portal.
