Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that 12 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were pushed back across the border after being detected by security agencies in the state.
The Chief Minister stated that the individuals were identified during an operation carried out by the Assam Police as part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal infiltration. According to him, after necessary verification, the immigrants were escorted back across the international border.
Sarma said the state government has strengthened surveillance along border areas and intensified operations to detect undocumented migrants entering Assam. He added that authorities remain committed to protecting the interests of the state’s indigenous population and maintaining strict enforcement of immigration laws.
Assam shares a long and sensitive border with Bangladesh, which has historically been a major route for illegal infiltration. Security agencies regularly conduct patrols and verification drives to detect individuals entering the state without valid documents.
Illegal immigration has remained a politically sensitive issue in Assam for decades and has shaped several political and social movements, including the historic Assam Movement that eventually led to the signing of the Assam Accord.
Officials said such operations will continue as part of the government’s broader effort to curb cross-border infiltration and strengthen border security in the state.
