A recent meeting between Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi and Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has sparked political speculation over a possible alliance ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly election 2026.
Gogoi met Soren in Ranchi during a visit that reportedly focused on discussing electoral strategies and strengthening cooperation between opposition parties before the Assam polls. The meeting has drawn attention as Soren leads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a regional party that may play a role in broader opposition coordination.
Speaking after the meeting, Soren said discussions were held on political developments and strategies related to the Assam elections. Gogoi also indicated that the Congress leadership is exploring ways to consolidate opposition forces in the state ahead of the crucial polls.
The meeting comes at a time when alliance negotiations among opposition parties in Assam remain fluid. The Indian National Congress has been holding discussions with several regional parties to strengthen its position against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Political observers believe the interaction could be part of wider efforts by opposition parties to build a stronger coalition against the BJP-led government in Assam.
Reacting to the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma questioned the need for political discussions about Assam to take place outside the state, adding a fresh political dimension to the debate.
With the Assembly elections approaching, such meetings are likely to intensify speculation about potential alliances and new political equations in Assam’s evolving electoral landscape.
