Seat-Sharing Talks with AGP Concluded, Says Assam CM; Differences Surface Over Key Seats

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, on Thursday announced that seat-sharing negotiations between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have been completed ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election. However, disagreements have surfaced over several key constituencies.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the BJP has finalized its seat-sharing arrangement with the AGP and communicated the decision to the party leadership. He added that discussions between the two alliance partners have now concluded.
Despite the agreement, friction has reportedly emerged in some constituencies where both parties have strong local leaders seeking nominations. Sarma acknowledged that in a few seats, both the BJP and AGP may field candidates, resulting in what he described as “friendly contests.”
Political observers say that such disagreements are common during seat-sharing negotiations, particularly in constituencies where both parties have established support bases. The situation may lead to negotiations at the leadership level to prevent divisions within the ruling alliance.
The BJP-led alliance is preparing for the 2026 assembly elections in Assam, where all 126 seats of the state assembly will be contested. The ruling coalition is aiming to retain power in the state, while opposition parties are also working to strengthen their alliances and finalize candidate selections.
Further announcements regarding seat allocations and candidates are expected in the coming weeks as political parties intensify preparations for the elections.
