Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has no plans to field Union Minister Pabitra Margherita in the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election 2026.
Speaking to reporters during the party’s Jan Ashirwad Yatra, the Chief Minister said Margherita will continue to serve in the Union government led by Narendra Modi and will not be shifted to state politics for the Assembly polls.
Sarma said it is a matter of pride for Assam that Margherita is serving as Minister of State for External Affairs, adding that the BJP wants him to continue his role at the Centre. “At present, there is no proposal to field him in the Assembly elections,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister also indicated that Margherita may be considered for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections but reiterated that the party’s focus is on keeping him in the Union Cabinet for now.
Responding to questions regarding candidate selection in Upper Assam, Sarma said the BJP has several strong leaders and the party will decide on suitable candidates closer to the polls. He also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding seat-sharing with allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), particularly in constituencies such as Sivasagar.
The elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are expected to be held in early 2026.
