Congress Fields Gaurav Gogoi in First List for Assam Assembly Polls

The Indian National Congress on Tuesday released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, naming state party president Gaurav Gogoi as the nominee from the Jorhat constituency.
The decision marks Gogoi’s first foray into state Assembly politics. A three-time Member of Parliament from Jorhat and the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi is expected to play a central role in the Congress campaign in the state.
In the list, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has been renominated from Nazira, while several other senior party figures have also been fielded in what the party described as an early push to strengthen its electoral preparedness.
Party sources indicated that the early announcement is aimed at giving candidates sufficient time to mobilise at the grassroots level ahead of the high-stakes contest, where the Congress will take on the ruling BJP-led alliance.
The Assam Assembly elections are expected to be held in March–April 2026, with major political parties intensifying their preparations across the state.
