A woman contractual employee was allegedly assaulted near the gate of the Digboi Refinery in Assam’s Tinsukia district, police said, after an FIR was lodged in connection with the incident.
According to reports, the incident took place at around 9:40 pm on Friday when the woman, identified as Momi Das, was returning home from duty on her scooty. She was reportedly intercepted near the refinery gate by a group of suspected contractual workers, including drivers, who allegedly assaulted her.
Sources said security personnel, including Home Guards and CISF staff, are usually deployed at the gate, while an Army camp is located roughly 300 metres away. However, it remains unclear whether any security personnel intervened at the time of the incident. No official statement had been issued by the refinery authorities till the filing of this report.
The victim was taken to a hospital in Digboi at around 10:15 pm for medical examination. Later in the night, three suspected individuals were also brought for medical formalities, indicating that police had initiated preliminary action.
An FIR was lodged the same night by the woman’s husband, formally triggering a police investigation. Family members have alleged that the accused were allowed to return home after medical examination, though police have yet to clarify whether any arrests have been made.
The victim’s brother also claimed that she had been facing workplace pressure earlier and alleged that she was inappropriately touched during the incident. Police are expected to verify these claims as part of the ongoing probe.
Investigators are likely to examine CCTV footage from the refinery area to establish the sequence of events. Further details are awaited
