Assam Govt Signs MoU With AAI; Pre-Feasibility Studies to Begin for Five New Airports

The Assam government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to undertake pre-feasibility studies for the development of five new greenfield airports in the state, marking a significant step toward expanding regional air connectivity.
The agreement was signed by Transport Commissioner and Secretary Akashdeep and AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to officials, the proposed airports are planned at Manas, Umrangso, Charaideo, Diphu and Majuli. The studies will examine the technical, financial and operational viability of establishing airports at these locations.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the initiative aims to strengthen connectivity in remote and strategically important regions while boosting tourism and economic growth. He noted that several of the identified sites hold significant tourism and national security value.
Officials from AAI stated that the pre-feasibility reports will guide the next steps, including site clearance and detailed project planning, if the proposals are found viable.
Sarma also highlighted the steady rise in passenger traffic at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and reiterated the state government’s vision of developing Guwahati into a major aviation hub for the Northeast. He further urged AAI to upgrade Rupsi Airport into a full-fledged facility and expand international connectivity from Guwahati.
Assam currently has seven operational airports. The proposed greenfield projects are expected to improve access to interior districts, reduce travel time and stimulate tourism and investment across the state.
If implemented, the new airports are likely to significantly enhance intra-state air connectivity and strengthen Assam’s position as the gateway to the Northeast.
