Arup Saikia Urges EC to Ensure Peaceful Polls in Naduwar

Writer and Bhaona artiste Arup Saikia has written to the Election Commission of India highlighting the sensitive situation in the 69 Naduwar (former Sootea) constituency in Assam.

In his letter, Saikia raised concerns over repeated incidents of alleged rigging, electoral malpractices, and political violence in the area over the years. He noted that even the last Panchayat elections could not be conducted due to violence, depriving people of their voting rights.

Referring to recent incidents on March 28–29, 2026, he mentioned cases of physical assault and vandalism, including damage to vehicles. He identified several vulnerable areas such as Chakighat, Panchmile, Rajgarh, Charduwar, Lokhra Bhalukmari, and Udmari as particularly prone to unrest.

Saikia urged the Commission to deploy adequate security forces, stating that the existing police presence may not be sufficient to handle the situation. He also highlighted concerns raised by locals about alleged involvement of miscreants.

Through this appeal, Saikia, along with concerned citizens, has called for strict measures to ensure law and order and guarantee free and fair elections in the constituency.
