In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, more than 150 leaders from various opposition parties joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a joining programme in Digboi, according to a report by Northeast Now.
The mass induction, held in Digboi, is seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its grassroots base in Upper Assam before the polls. The new entrants reportedly include office-bearers and workers from parties such as the Indian National Congress and other regional outfits.
Local BJP leaders welcomed the defectors and expressed confidence that the move would boost the party’s organisational strength in the region. The joining programme also highlighted the ruling party’s continuing efforts to expand its support ahead of the statewide electoral battle.
