In a significant development for women’s higher education in the Northeast, Assam Women’s University has shifted to its permanent campus at Kaliyapani in Teok under Jorhat district.
The newly constructed campus was inaugurated on Wednesday by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking the end of more than a decade of the university functioning from temporary premises. Built at an estimated cost of around ₹29 crore across nearly 58 bighas of land, the campus is expected to strengthen women’s access to higher education in the region.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma described the occasion as historic and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to developing the university into a premier institution for women in the Northeast.
The university was established after the Assam Legislative Assembly passed the relevant Bill on July 15, 2013, and it was formally inaugurated on September 11, 2014 during the tenure of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Since its inception, the institution had been operating from the premises of Assam Agricultural University.
State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who was present at the inauguration, said the university had remained overlooked for years despite its importance. He noted that construction of the permanent campus had been underway for the past five years.
At present, the university runs 17 departments offering 46 academic programmes and has implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework along with various skill development initiatives. The campus features modern classrooms, departmental facilities and administrative blocks, while construction of a girls’ hostel is in progress.
With around 1,200 students currently enrolled, officials expressed hope that the new infrastructure will attract more students from across the Northeast and further advance women’s empowerment through education.
