Police in Assam’s Cachar district have arrested one person in connection with an alleged gang rape and extortion incident reported along the Chengkuri bypass near Silchar, while a manhunt has been launched to nab other suspects involved in the crime.
According to Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das, an FIR was registered after the victims lodged a complaint, and the accused was apprehended following a prompt investigation. Police said multiple teams are working to identify and arrest the remaining accused.
As per the FIR, the incident allegedly took place on the night of February 19 when the victims were inside a parked car along the bypass at Chengkuri. A group of men, reportedly arriving in an SUV, confronted them. The male victim was allegedly held at knifepoint while the woman was sexually assaulted. The assailants also allegedly extorted money from the victims before fleeing the scene.
Officials said the sequence of events and the individual roles of the accused are under close scrutiny. Police have assured that strict action will be taken and that efforts have been intensified to bring all those involved to justice.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who have raised questions over safety in isolated stretches around the bypass and demanded stronger policing measures in the area.
