Assam Raises Orthodox Tea Subsidy to ₹15 per Kg

The Assam government has increased the subsidy for orthodox tea production to ₹15 per kilogram, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s premium tea segment and supporting growers facing rising input costs.
Officials said the enhanced incentive is intended to promote higher production of orthodox tea, which typically fetches better prices in international markets than CTC tea. The decision is also expected to encourage small and medium tea producers to shift toward quality-focused manufacturing and improve Assam’s competitiveness in the global specialty tea trade.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the hike, stating that the increased subsidy could help revive interest in orthodox tea production and provide relief to tea gardens grappling with cost pressures. The tea sector remains a major contributor to Assam’s economy and employment.
The state government is expected to release detailed implementation guidelines and eligibility criteria for availing the revised subsidy in the coming days.
