The Congress has tasked senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra with overseeing the selection of party candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, signalling an early organisational push ahead of the high-stakes contest.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting in New Delhi attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Gaurav Gogoi and other senior leaders. Priyanka Gandhi, who is heading the party’s screening process for Assam, has already begun consultations with state leaders and grassroots workers to assess ground realities and identify winnable candidates.
Party sources said the selection process will prioritise factors such as organisational feedback, local credibility and electoral viability. APCC leaders also emphasised the importance of alliance coordination, indicating that seat-sharing talks with like-minded opposition parties are likely to continue in the coming weeks.
The move is seen as part of the Congress’ broader strategy to strengthen its position in Assam and present a cohesive challenge to the ruling BJP in the forthcoming Assembly polls.
