The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to provide basic amenities to families affected by the Hasila Beel eviction, underscoring that the right to live with dignity must be protected even during lawful eviction drives.
Hearing a petition on the issue, the court instructed the state authorities to ensure essential facilities—including safe drinking water, sanitation, shelter, and healthcare—at the relief locations where the displaced families have been moved. The bench observed that while the government is empowered to conduct eviction in accordance with the law, it also bears a humanitarian responsibility toward those rendered homeless.
The court has sought a compliance report from the state government and listed the matter for further hearing.
