New Book “Our Burden of Grief” Chronicles Human and Environmental Toll of 2020 Baghjan Gas Well Blowout in Assam

A new book titled “Our Burden of Grief” has brought together the lived experiences of survivors of the 2020 Baghjan gas well blowout in Assam, documenting the long-term human and environmental impact of the disaster.
Published recently, the book compiles testimonies of residents affected by the blowout at Oil India Limited’s Baghjan well in Tinsukia district. Through personal narratives, it highlights displacement, loss of livelihoods, ecological damage and the prolonged struggle for compensation and rehabilitation faced by the local community. The volume aims to preserve the voices of those directly impacted and to draw wider public attention to the social costs of industrial disasters in ecologically sensitive regions such as the Dibru-Saikhowa landscape. The authors and contributors hope the documentation will inform policy discussions and strengthen demands for accountability, environmental safeguards and justice for survivors.
