CAG Audit Reveals Lapses in Assam’s School Bus Permit System, Student Safety at Risk

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has flagged serious irregularities in the issuance of school bus permits across eight districts of Assam, raising concerns over compliance and passenger safety.
According to the audit findings, several school buses were operating either without valid permits or with permits issued in violation of prescribed rules. The report noted lapses by district transport authorities in properly verifying documents and enforcing regulatory norms, allowing unauthorized vehicles to transport students.
The CAG observed that the irregularities could compromise student safety and pointed to weak monitoring mechanisms within the state’s transport administration. It recommended stricter scrutiny, improved record-keeping, and stronger enforcement to ensure that only properly authorised school buses operate on Assam’s roads.
