The Election Commission of India (ECI) has approved the deployment of 16,500 additional Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for Assam in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections, officials said.
The decision comes as part of advance poll preparedness to ensure the smooth conduct of voting across the state. Election authorities in Assam had requested the additional machines to meet operational requirements, manage contingencies, and support the anticipated increase in polling stations.
With the fresh allotment, officials said Assam will maintain an adequate reserve of EVMs for both polling and replacement purposes on election day. The move is expected to strengthen logistical readiness and minimize the risk of technical or supply-related disruptions during the electoral process.
The ECI has been reviewing election preparedness measures in poll-bound states, with emphasis on the timely availability of voting equipment, training of polling personnel, and strengthening of infrastructure to ensure free and fair elections.
Further details regarding the poll schedule are awaited.
