Assam’s Kiuchenghan Phukon Becomes World’s Youngest to Swim from Elephanta Island to Gateway of India

Assam’s Kiuchenghan Phukon has created history by becoming the world’s youngest swimmer to successfully complete the open-sea swim from Elephanta Island to the Gateway of India in Mumbai, a challenging distance of approximately 13 kilometres.
The young swimmer completed the arduous swim across the Arabian Sea in 3 hours and 29 minutes, braving strong currents and fluctuating sea conditions. With this achievement, she has also become the first female swimmer from Northeast India to accomplish the feat.
Kiuchenghan hails from Sivasagar district and is currently based in Guwahati, where she undergoes regular training at leading aquatic facilities. She completed the swim under the guidance of her coach, Babul Gurung, following months of rigorous preparation and endurance training.
Officials from the Assam Swimming Association and sports fraternity congratulated her on the landmark achievement, describing it as a moment of pride for the state and an inspiration for young athletes across the region.
The Elephanta Island–Gateway of India swim is considered one of India’s most demanding open-water swimming challenges due to heavy boat traffic, tides and unpredictable sea conditions. Kiuchenghan’s success at such a young age places her among the most promising open-water swimmers in the country.
Her achievement has drawn widespread appreciation, highlighting Assam’s growing presence on the national and international sporting stage.
