17 Held in Assam for Suspected Poisoning of Migratory Bird

At least 17 people were detained in Assam on Tuesday in connection with the suspected poisoning of migratory birds in Majuli district, officials said, after dozens of birds were found dead in agricultural fields.
According to the police and forest department, the carcasses of over 50 migratory birds were discovered on January 26 in several villages, including Dakshinpat Kumar Gaon, Sumoimari, Komargaon and Rawanagaon. Preliminary investigations suggest that the birds may have died after consuming poisoned food or pesticides allegedly placed in the fields.
Officials said the detained individuals, including four women, are being questioned to ascertain their role in the incident. Samples from the dead birds have been sent for forensic examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
Forest department sources said that eight birds showing symptoms of poisoning were rescued alive and are undergoing treatment at a veterinary facility. The department has launched a detailed probe in coordination with the police.
The incident has sparked concern among wildlife conservationists and bird lovers, as Majuli, the world’s largest river island, serves as an important seasonal habitat for migratory birds during winter.
Authorities said those found guilty could be booked under provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which prescribes strict punishment for the killing of protected species.
Officials have urged residents to refrain from using harmful chemicals in open fields and said awareness drives would be intensified to prevent such incidents in the future.
