The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety on Sunday reviewed the road safety measures being implemented in Assam, stressing the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and targeted interventions to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the state.
The review meeting was chaired by Justice (Retd.) Abhay Manohar Sapre, chairman of the Supreme Court road safety panel, and was attended by senior officials of the Assam Transport Department, Assam Police and other concerned agencies. The panel assessed the state’s compliance with Supreme Court directives on road safety and examined data related to accidents, fatalities and enforcement over the past few years.
During the meeting, Justice Sapre emphasised the importance of district-specific strategies, particularly in accident-prone areas. He underlined the need for rigorous enforcement of helmet and seatbelt norms, curbs on drunken driving and overspeeding, and effective implementation of provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The panel also highlighted the importance of sustained road safety awareness campaigns, improvement of road engineering standards and strengthening of trauma care and emergency response systems along highways. Officials were advised to adopt a coordinated approach involving multiple departments to address road safety concerns more effectively.
Assam government officials briefed the committee on steps taken to enhance road safety, including the use of technology for traffic monitoring, enforcement drives and initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and public awareness. They assured the panel that its recommendations would be examined and implemented in a time-bound manner.
Road accidents continue to pose a major challenge in Assam, prompting the state government to focus on data-driven strategies and stricter enforcement. The Supreme Court panel’s review is expected to further strengthen these efforts and help improve overall road safety across the state.
