Residents of Retzawl and nearby villages in Dima Hasao district have urged the government to urgently blacktop the Jatinga–Retzawl stretch of the old Haflong–Silchar road, citing poor road conditions that are affecting daily life and connectivity.
Villagers said the road has become extremely difficult to traverse, especially during the monsoon season, when rain and landslides make the uneven surface hazardous. Local communities depend on this route for access to markets, schools, healthcare facilities, and essential services, and the deteriorating condition has caused significant inconvenience.
Thilsinghluo Tuolor, headman of Retzawl village, expressed frustration that while major highway projects such as the Jatinga–Harangajao section of NH‑27 are progressing, the needs of local communities remain neglected. “Our villages have no alternative route. We appeal to the authorities to prioritise the blacktopping of this road to ensure safe and reliable connectivity,” he said.
Villagers welcomed progress on the NH‑27 corridor but stressed that improvement of feeder and link roads like the Jatinga–Retzawl stretch is equally vital for local development. They noted that better road infrastructure would not only improve safety but also boost economic activity in the region.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has not yet responded to the latest demand. Local leaders said they will continue to press authorities for timely action to address the pressing connectivity issues faced by their communities.
The residents’ appeal highlights wider concerns about infrastructure development in hilly districts, where many villages remain isolated due to neglected link roads.
