Biswanath Chariali: In a heart-warming turn of events, a woman who went missing more than two decades ago was reunited with her family in Assam’s Biswanath district, bringing an emotional end to a long and painful search.
The woman, identified as Manju Mardi, had gone missing in 2001 at the age of seven. She was originally from Karibil Bongali village under the Behali area of Biswanath district. According to family members, she was taken to Dimapur in Nagaland by her father along with another woman in search of work but subsequently lost contact with her family under tragic circumstances.
For over 20 years, Manju’s family, particularly her father, continued searching for her despite severe financial hardship. Multiple attempts to trace her whereabouts proved unsuccessful, and the family eventually lost hope of ever seeing her again.
The breakthrough came recently when Manju, who had been working as a domestic helper in Dimapur for several years, expressed her desire to return home. Her current employer contacted a local non-governmental organisation, which then coordinated with community representatives and officials to trace her roots.
With the help of social organisations and local administration in both Assam and Nagaland, Manju’s family was finally located. She was escorted back to her native village earlier this week, where she was reunited with her father and other relatives in an emotional scene witnessed by villagers.
Although Manju initially struggled to recognise some family members due to the long separation, relatives said she has gradually begun reconnecting with them. The family expressed deep gratitude to the individuals and organisations whose efforts made the reunion possible.
Local residents hailed the reunion as a rare and emotional moment, highlighting the importance of social support systems and coordinated efforts in tracing missing persons.
