Blocks Posts, Deletes Accounts Over Grok Obscenity Row: Sources

Social media platform X has blocked thousands of posts and deleted hundreds of user accounts in India following government intervention over the circulation of obscene content allegedly generated or amplified using its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, official sources said on Sunday.
According to government sources, X has blocked around 3,500 posts and removed more than 600 accounts that were found to be sharing or promoting sexually explicit and objectionable content in violation of Indian laws. The action followed a notice issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), which flagged the content and sought immediate corrective measures from the platform.
Sources said X acknowledged lapses in content moderation and assured the government that it would comply with Indian legal provisions. The company has reportedly submitted an action-taken report and committed to strengthening safeguards to prevent the generation and spread of obscene content through AI tools such as Grok.
The MeitY notice had directed the platform to remove unlawful and indecent material within a stipulated time frame, warning that non-compliance could lead to legal action and the loss of safe harbour protections under the Information Technology Act.
Officials said the government is closely monitoring the situation and expects social media platforms to exercise due diligence, particularly with the growing use of artificial intelligence tools that can be misused to create explicit or harmful content.
The issue has sparked wider debate on AI governance and content moderation, with authorities reiterating that technological innovation must remain within the bounds of the law and respect user safety and dignity.
