The Assam government has approved the appointment of a team of Special Public Prosecutors (SPPs) to conduct the prosecution in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case, officials said on Friday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The move is aimed at ensuring focused and effective legal representation as the case proceeds in court, given its sensitivity and public importance.
According to official sources, senior advocate Ziaul Kamar has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor, while Brojendra Mohan Chaudhuri will serve as the Additional Special Public Prosecutor. The Cabinet also approved the appointment of Kishor Dutta, Pranjal Dutta and Vikash Jammar as Assistant Special Public Prosecutors in the case.
The Zubeen Garg death case has drawn widespread public attention across Assam, prompting the state government to take additional legal measures. The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which has been probing the circumstances surrounding the noted singer’s death.
Officials said the appointment of a dedicated team of special prosecutors would help strengthen the prosecution and ensure that the case is pursued in a time-bound and professional manner.
In a related decision, the Cabinet also approved financial assistance for the Zubeen Garg Memorial Trust, established by the late singer’s family to preserve and promote his artistic legacy. The state government has sanctioned ₹5 crore for the trust.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice in the case and said it would continue to closely monitor the progress of both the investigation and the subsequent trial.
