Pacify Karbi Anglong; Situation Tense but Under Control

The Assam government has expressed readiness to hold talks with stakeholders to defuse tensions in Karbi Anglong, where the situation remains tense but under control following recent unrest. Authorities said security arrangements have been strengthened across sensitive areas to prevent any escalation.
Senior officials confirmed that the state administration is open to dialogue with protesting groups and representatives of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to address grievances and restore normalcy. The move comes amid heightened security deployment, including additional police and central forces, and regular flag marches in affected localities.
According to the administration, no fresh incidents of violence were reported in the last 24 hours. However, restrictions remain in place in parts of the district as a precautionary measure. Internet services were suspended in some areas to curb the spread of rumours and misinformation, while prohibitory orders continue to be enforced.
The unrest in Karbi Anglong was triggered by protests over issues related to land and local rights, including allegations of illegal encroachment on protected grazing and reserve lands. The agitation intensified in recent days, leading to clashes that left several people injured, including security personnel.
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) said the priority is to maintain law and order while creating space for meaningful dialogue. “The situation is under control. We are engaging with all concerned parties to resolve the issue peacefully,” a senior police official said.
Meanwhile, the state government has appealed to residents to maintain calm, refrain from violence, and cooperate with the authorities. Officials stressed that talks would be held soon to address demands through constitutional and administrative mechanisms.
Karbi Anglong, a Sixth Schedule area, has witnessed periodic tensions linked to land, autonomy, and identity-related issues. The latest developments have once again brought focus on the need for sustained dialogue between the government and local communities to ensure long-term peace in the region.
