Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday accused the Congress of politicising the issue surrounding Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, alleging that the opposition is using a “pre-planned strategy” to gain electoral advantage ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Addressing the media, Sarma claimed that a purported “strategy video” points to a deliberate attempt by the Congress to turn the issue into a campaign narrative. He criticised the party for invoking Garg’s name in its political messaging, urging leaders to refrain from using the legacy of the popular singer for electoral gains.
“The Congress should not drag Zubeen Garg into politics. Such emotional issues must be handled with sensitivity,” Sarma said, asserting that the matter is already under due legal process.
The Congress, however, has made the issue a key part of its poll campaign, promising justice and raising concerns over the handling of the case. The development has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition in the run-up to the elections.
Political observers note that the issue has resonated strongly with sections of the public, particularly among Garg’s supporters, and could influence voter sentiment in several constituencies.
With the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election approaching, the controversy has emerged as a major flashpoint, highlighting the high-stakes battle between the BJP and the Congress in the state.
