Eminent academician and noted litterateur Dr Bhubaneswar Deka was conferred the prestigious Lal Hussain and Lilimai Begum Memorial Zikir Sadhana Award 2026 at a समारोह held in Sivasagar on Tuesday.
The award was presented at a programme organised by Bagh Hazarika Jagarana Mancha at the Sibsagar Press Club auditorium, in recognition of Dr Deka’s significant contribution to the study and promotion of Zikir literature in Assam.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Deka highlighted the cultural and spiritual importance of Zikir songs composed by Ajan Fakir, stating that these devotional compositions form an integral part of Assam’s syncretic heritage. He also drew parallels between Zikirs and the Borgeets composed by Srimanta Sankardev, underlining their shared role in shaping the state’s cultural identity.
The event also featured the release of several literary works. Academician Dr Jiban Kalita unveiled a memorial volume titled “Soragurir Sur,” edited by Naziullah Hazarika. Additionally, poet Prema Gogoi released the book “Samanwita Samajor Ruprekha,” authored by essayist Asad Ullah.
The programme witnessed the participation of scholars, writers, and cultural enthusiasts, celebrating the legacy of Zikir traditions and their enduring relevance in Assam’s socio-cultural landscape.
