Amit Shah Calls for Deportation of Illegal Immigrants, Targets Congress in Assam Poll Campaign

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday sharpened the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, calling for the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants while launching a strong attack on the opposition Indian National Congress.
Addressing an election rally in Dhekiajuli in Assam, Shah said illegal immigration remains a major challenge for the state and asserted that all such infiltrators would be detected and deported if the BJP returns to power. He stressed that protecting Assam’s cultural identity and safeguarding its resources are among the party’s top priorities.
Shah accused the Congress of failing to address the issue during its tenure, alleging that the party had allowed infiltration to continue unchecked. He claimed that earlier governments lacked the political will to act decisively, whereas the BJP-led government has taken concrete steps to curb illegal entry and strengthen border security.
The issue of illegal immigration has once again taken centre stage in the run-up to the elections, with the BJP projecting strict action against infiltrators as a key poll promise. The party is aiming to secure a third consecutive term in the state.
The 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election is scheduled to be held on April 9, with campaigning intensifying across constituencies. Senior BJP leaders, including Shah, have been holding rallies across the state to consolidate support ahead of the polls.
