Safer Assam? Himanta Biswa Sarma Highlights Drop in Crime Rate

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the state has witnessed a significant decline in crime rates over the past few years, attributing the improvement to stronger governance, effective policing, and sustained development initiatives.
Addressing the issue, Sarma remarked that “crimes and criminals have received a body blow” in Assam, highlighting what he described as a major transformation in the state’s law and order situation. He noted that improved coordination between law enforcement agencies and administrative reforms have contributed to better crime control and higher conviction rates.
The Chief Minister also credited the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for supporting Assam’s efforts in strengthening internal security and maintaining stability.
Emphasising the role of development in reducing crime, Sarma said the government has focused on inclusive growth, particularly in hill districts and among indigenous communities. He pointed out that regions such as Bokajan, Diphu, Howraghat, and Amri have benefited from welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and livelihood initiatives aimed at improving socio-economic conditions.
According to the Chief Minister, the government’s dual approach of development and strict law enforcement has played a crucial role in creating a safer environment for citizens. He added that sustained efforts will continue to ensure long-term peace and stability in the state.
The statement comes in the backdrop of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections in 2026, where issues of governance, development, and law and order are expected to be central to political discourse.
