AJP’s Gen Z Candidate Kunki Chowdhury to File Nomination for Assam Polls on March 23

In a bid to bring youthful representation into Assam’s political landscape, the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has fielded 26-year-old Kunki Chowdhury from the Guwahati Central constituency for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026. She is set to file her nomination on March 23.
Chowdhury’s nomination will be preceded by a joint rally by opposition alliance partners, showcasing unity ahead of the polls. The rally is expected to begin from the Congress city office at Manabendra Sarma Complex in Dispur and proceed to the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Commissioner’s office in Hengrabari, where the nomination process will take place.
The AJP candidate is part of a broader opposition alliance that includes the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference. The alliance aims to consolidate anti-incumbency votes and strengthen its presence in key constituencies.
Speaking ahead of the nomination, Chowdhury said she hopes to bring a “new vision” to the constituency and urged youth, women, and local residents to participate in the rally. Her candidature is being seen as part of a wider effort by opposition parties to engage younger voters and introduce fresh faces into state politics.
At 26, Chowdhury is among the youngest candidates contesting this election, highlighting a generational shift in Assam’s electoral arena. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, with polling scheduled to be held on April 9.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness a multi-cornered contest, with both ruling and opposition parties intensifying their campaigns across the state.
