Kokrajhar Observes 12-Hour Bandh After Alleged Rape Sparks Public Outrage

Normal life came to a standstill in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Sunday as a 12-hour bandh was observed following widespread outrage over the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman.
The shutdown, called by a local organisation, was enforced from 6 am to 6 pm across Kokrajhar town and adjoining areas. Shops, markets and business establishments remained closed, while public and private transport services were largely suspended, leaving roads deserted for most of the day. Educational institutions and private offices were also affected, though essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies and emergency services continued to function.
The bandh followed protests that erupted after the alleged incident, which reportedly took place in the Patharghat area of the district. Protesters demanded swift justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the accused. On Saturday, agitators had blocked key roads, including the Kokrajhar–Bilasipara road, to press their demands.
Police said the accused has been arrested and an investigation is underway. Legal and medical procedures related to the case have been initiated, and the victim is receiving necessary care, officials added.
To prevent any breach of law and order, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders and deployed additional police personnel at sensitive locations. Authorities said the bandh remained largely peaceful and no major untoward incidents were reported.
District officials appealed to the public to maintain calm and refrain from spreading rumours, assuring that the case is being dealt with seriously and in accordance with the law.
