Assam is likely to experience continued winter chill accompanied by fog and mist across several districts till December 30, according to weather forecasts. The prevailing conditions are expected to affect early morning visibility, particularly in low-lying areas and riverine belts.
Meteorological officials said that dense to moderate fog may occur during the late night and early morning hours in parts of Upper Assam, Central Assam and the Barak Valley. The persistent mist is likely to lead to cold day conditions in some areas, with minimum temperatures remaining below normal.
The chill has already been felt across the state over the past few days, with residents reporting colder mornings and reduced sunshine. Visibility disruptions due to fog could impact road, rail and ferry services, prompting authorities to advise commuters to exercise caution during early hours.
Weather experts attributed the conditions to western disturbances and northerly winds, which are bringing colder air into the region. While daytime temperatures may see marginal improvement, nights and mornings are expected to remain cold.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority and local administrations have urged people, especially the elderly and children, to take necessary precautions against the cold. Farmers have also been advised to monitor weather updates, as prolonged fog and low temperatures could affect winter crops.
The current weather pattern is expected to gradually ease after December 30, with clearer skies and a slight rise in temperatures thereafter.
