As political activity intensifies ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, college campuses across the state are witnessing growing discussions among students, many of whom will vote for the first time.
With political parties stepping up their campaigns, students in universities and colleges are increasingly debating issues such as employment opportunities, quality of education, infrastructure development and rising living costs. These concerns, students say, will play a crucial role in shaping their voting decisions.
Many young voters view the upcoming election as an opportunity to influence the direction of the state’s future. Several students expressed that while politics was once a distant subject, the approaching polls have prompted them to pay closer attention to governance and policy debates.
However, the level of political engagement varies widely across campuses. While some students actively discuss party agendas and leadership choices, others remain cautious about expressing political preferences publicly, choosing instead to focus on their studies and career goals.
Political conversations among students are often informal, taking place in classrooms, hostels and on social media platforms rather than through organised student political activities.
First-time voters are expected to form a significant segment of the electorate in the upcoming election. Many college students who recently turned 18 are preparing to cast their votes for the first time, making the youth demographic an important target group for political parties.
Recognising this, several parties have begun emphasising youth-centric issues such as job creation, skill development programmes, and improvements in higher education. Campaign outreach through digital platforms has also increased as parties attempt to connect with younger voters.
Despite the heightened political buzz, many students say their support will depend largely on performance and policy rather than party loyalty. For them, development, employment prospects and governance will be key factors in determining their choices at the ballot box.
With the election drawing closer, campuses across Assam are likely to remain important spaces where young voters discuss, debate and shape their political opinions.
