Assam Police Warns Against Rumours of LPG Shortage Amid Panic Buying

Assam Police has urged residents not to believe or spread rumours about a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the state, after panic buying was reported in several areas following misleading social media messages.
According to officials, rumours circulating online claimed that LPG supplies would soon run out, prompting many people to rush to refill their gas cylinders. The sudden surge in demand led to long queues at distribution centres and concerns about supply disruptions.
In response, the police clarified that there is no shortage of LPG in Assam and that the supply chain is functioning normally. Authorities warned that spreading false information could create unnecessary panic and inconvenience for the public.
The police also appealed to people to rely only on official information and avoid forwarding unverified messages on social media platforms. They cautioned that legal action may be taken against individuals found responsible for spreading rumours.
Officials from oil marketing companies also reassured consumers that LPG stocks are adequate and distribution is continuing without disruption.
The advisory comes at a time when misinformation on social media has been triggering panic buying in several regions, affecting the normal supply and distribution of essential commodities.
Authorities have asked citizens to remain calm and cooperate with distributors to ensure smooth and fair access to LPG for all consumers.
