Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies are in a strong position in 103 out of 126 Assembly seats ahead of the 2026 state elections. The party is reportedly considering around 40 new candidates as part of its strategy to refresh its roster for the polls.
Speaking to the media, Sarma highlighted the BJP’s organizational strength and governance record as key factors behind the party’s projected performance. “We are confident about our prospects in over 100 seats. At the same time, we are bringing in new faces to ensure dynamic leadership at the constituency level,” he said.
The BJP’s announcement comes amid mounting political activity as parties gear up for the polls expected around March–April 2026. The Indian National Congress has already released a 20-point “chargesheet” against the BJP government, alleging corruption and mismanagement, while also highlighting issues such as unemployment and crime against women.
Union leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, have emphasized the BJP’s achievements in border security and governance, while the party’s grassroots cadre continues to be credited for consolidating support across the state. BJP leaders are hopeful of achieving a historic third consecutive term in Assam.
Meanwhile, seat-sharing arrangements among BJP allies such as the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) are being finalized. On the other side, Congress is in discussions with regional and left parties to strengthen its opposition front.
The upcoming elections will witness all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam being contested, with the majority mark set at 64 seats. The political battle in Assam is expected to be closely watched, given the state’s strategic importance in the Northeast and the strong campaigns by both the ruling BJP and opposition parties.
